Fabric paint and HTV

Here’s the shirt I made for my youngest daughter yesterday.  Well, I decorated it anyway.  🙂  I don’t sew, so it’s nice to make some form of handcrafted clothing once in a while.

The hardest part, as usual, was finding a good idea. I knew I wanted to use more than one layer, and I wanted to use more than one medium. After much online inspiration searching, I found a graphic tee by OshKosh that said “Super” with a star that really appealed to me.

I took parts of several shapes to create this design and used my Silhouette to cut out the star from smooth silver heat transfer vinyl, the “super” from white flocked heat transfer vinyl, and the paint stripes out of freezer paper to use as a painting stencil. Yup, Reynolds freezer paper and black fabric ink.

As a little afterthought, I added “made by mommy” to the bottom of the shirt. Hey, if OshKosh can put their logo on all their graphic tees, why can’t I put a little something? I remember as a little girl having my mom make cute clothes for me and people would ask, “Did your mom make that?” Now I can do the same for my kids.

Come back for more…I’m working on a shirt for my other daughter, plus I’ve added HTV to a hat and a backpack.

Silhouette shapes used:
Independence Design (ID #11564)
Fun Flourish (ID #9211)

  • This is gorgeous! May I ask – did you have any problems with applying the HTV on the painted areas?
Did you iron the fabric paint and only then added the HTV, or did you iron both at once?

    Thanks for sharing!

  • The HTV goes on and stays on the painted areas just fine. I do iron the ink to set it before adding the HTV, although that may not be necessary.
