Birthday Ribbon

Birthday Ribbon

Who likes to be the star of the show on their birthday?  Every kid I know.  This is a fancy ribbon that can be worn by the birthday boy or girl on his or her special day.  Sometimes it’s nice to draw a little attention and get recognition on their special day, whether they’re at their own party or just going shopping with Mom.

I used the pieces I wanted from this award ribbon pinwheel file and used printable cotton canvas for the print & cut medallion and matching tassels.  The cotton canvas generally makes the colors a little more muted, so I added some pizzazz with a little glitter and rhinestones.

To add glitter, I cut out tiny little letters and the candle flame from double-sided adhesive. Yes, I cut them that tiny and applied each and every one to the canvas. Call me crazy, but I love the end result.  I used glitter from the bold glitter set.  To get the glitter to stick to the double-sided adhesive on this canvas I poured a little bit of glitter on the sticky letters I had already put in place, rubbed it in with a piece of scratch paper, then tapped off the excess.

How did I get off all those itty bitty remaining bits of glitter on the fabric, you ask?  With the sticky end of my Silhouette pick-me-up tool!  It was so perfect for this small area.  The sticky stuff is disposable, so when it gets covered in glitter, just pull off the end bit and twist the tool to squeeze out a little more.

I also thought this charming birthday crab needed some dimension to his eyes so I used some dark green rhinestones.  If you have a Silhouette rhinestone setter (no longer sold), it’s perfect for just a few rhinestones.  The end gets extremely hot, so just hold it against the rhinestone and it heats up the rhinestone and melts the glue on the back, fusing it to the surface. (Note: you can use a clothing iron for individual rhinestones, although it’s more difficult to see what you are doing.)

Silhouette chipboard is great for different layers of a ribbon like this to make it nice and sturdy.  I stuck the printable cotton canvas medallion to a chipboard circle of the same size, and also used another chipboard circle of the same size on the back to attach the pin (these can be found at most craft stores).

What kid wouldn’t love to share with the world that it’s his or her birthday by wearing a fun ribbon?
