Desk Organizer

Desk organizer - Finding Time To Create

Spring is here in my neck of the woods, and that means a little spring cleaning.  Time to stop huddling under blankets and get some cleaning and organization done!  Have you seen all of the organization options in the Silhouette online store?  I chose a cute little 3D drawer desk organizer for this project.  I think the adorable drawers are the detail that drew me to this one.

Often when I’m creating a card or a scrapbook page, I like to have all my elements open at once on a single work page in Studio.  With a large 3D file like this, however, the opposite is true.  You’ll notice upon opening a file like this that your software may act a little sluggish.  If we break this file up onto multiple pages, everything will be much simpler (and faster).

You can see below that the file opens in one group and is spread across about 54 inches!  To see the whole thing at once, use the double-arrow zoom tool (I call it my “fast zoom”).  Click on the double-arrow icon, then click and drag your mouse upwards anywhere on the page to zoom out.  The opposite motion zooms in very quickly.

  • To break up the original file, simply ungroup it (right click, Ungroup), then select a portion of the design that will fit on another page.  The designer was very helpful with this one, so it’s already grouped into manageable pieces that can be cut on letter-size or larger paper.
  • Click or drag to select, then cut it (right click, Cut).
  • Now open a new page (Ctrl/Cmd N), and Paste (Ctrl/Cmd V) that section onto the new page.
  • Go back to the original document and repeat this process until you’ve taken large sections away from the original page and transported them each to their own page.  You’ll notice the response time of the software improves with each dissection.

Now it’s just a matter of cutting out the pieces and gluing them together.  The designer has an excellent assembly tutorial here.  I chose a fun double-sided pattern paper with Silhouette adhesive cardstock in rose for the accent drawers and white brads for the drawer pulls.

This desk organizer was so fun I made one for myself and one for my daughters.  This one has gone to sit on my desk at work and I’ll make another for our homework area at home.

  • I made about 6 of these for Christmas presents – (filled, of course) and they all went down well. Easy to construct too.

  • As always, you did a superb job on your project, Kelly. I need to get to work on making one or more for myself. I can visualize one for my kitchen to hold new recipes that I'm testing, a few standbys, and those little scraps of notepaper that I write them on while browsing through magazines in doctor's offices. My desk desperately needs one or more as well, and hopefully I will get to it as soon as I finish other projects that are partially done. Your organizer is just darling!
