Silhouette Tutorial: Design a Custom Envelope

I was asked how to design a 4×6″ envelope in Studio without having to purchase an envelope file from the online store. I love a challenge and had some time, so I made this video tutorial to share with you. You can use these techniques to create a flat envelope for any size of card; just make your beginning rectangle the size of your card.

This is how it turned out when I cut it from a piece of lightweight 8.5″x11″ pattern paper.

  • Great tutorial Kelly —– thank you for doing this! Any thoughts on making 6 x6 envies? If it can be done with one sheet of 12 x 12 paper, turning the pattern is probably the key as it is here.

    • I'd have to try it, but you can probably make narrow side flaps and longer top and bottom flaps to compensate and still cover that area in front. If you make them more rectangular instead of triangular it should work and fit on a 12×12 page.

    • I tried making a 6×6 envelope this morning, and its pretty hard to fit on to a 12×12 mat. The problem is the base square is 6.25", and then the top and bottom flaps have to overlap slightly, making their total added length a minimum of 6.5". That makes the total length of the envelope nearly 13" long and reasonably 7-8" wide. You may be able to do it in the end, but it might be easier to resize the card itself to 5" to make it all fit better.
