Vellum Lantern
One of the best things having a Silhouette machine has done for me is to expand my world. I love living in this age of technology where I can have a machine that does what it does, and then I can post the project pictures on my blog or talk about it on forums, and even teach classes online to share what I know. No more sitting at home day after day with only little children to converse with! (Don’t get me wrong; I love my conversations with my kids, but adult conversation is nice, too.)
I feel like I’ve made so many friends over the past few years, the vast majority of whom I’ve never met in person, and one of these friends made this gorgeous cutting file and shared it with me. Thank you, Barbara!
(Check the end of my blog post for instructions to purchase this file.)
Of all the paper creations I have on display in my home, this one is attracting the most attention. Even my husband has mentioned more than once how much he likes it. ๐ I made it from textured Bazzill cardstock and heavy vellum, all cut on my Silhouette Cameo. I only had the right amount of paper on hand to cut one of each required piece, so thank goodness for practice test cuts to get all my settings right before cutting the full pieces!
Isn’t the detail amazing? It was a treat to work with this file.
And of course with vellum for the top and side panels, I had to put a battery-operated tea light in this and light it up every night. I love it!
If you would like to purchase this lantern file designed by Barbara (in SVG format), please send $3 via PayPal to sweetsandals@gmail.com. She will email the file to you upon receipt of your payment. Please mention that you want the “Winter’s Glow Lantern”.
I have never been more pleased with anything I've created, than to see it re-created by you! You are a tremendous design influence, and I've learned so much from you in the way of practical advice and guidance that I will be grateful for, Kelly! I love watching you create, but most of all I value you tremendously as a friend.
Wow this is so beautiful
hugs Linda
Kelly, You and Barbara make quite a team. Barbara's gorgeous designs and your finished product. This is just beautiful. You are both invaluable to the Silhouette community. Kate

I've added instructions above if you want to buy this file from Barbara. ๐
Fabulous lantern! You did a wonderful job designing it Barbara and love Kelly your cutting of it. It is beautiful with the tea lights in it.
Wow! This is gorgeous!! Is the file available? I would love to make some. ๐
I've added instructions to my blog post above if you want to purchase this file from Barbara. ๐
Love the lanterns. You didn't mention what file you used. Where did you get the heavy vellum. You always have the best projects using the Silhouette.
My friend Barbara gave me this cutting file which she designed. The vellum I've had in my stash for years and finally found the perfect use. ๐
I asked Barbara if she'd be willing to sell this cut file, and she is. I've added instructions to the end of my post.
How do you use PayPal via email? I have a PayPal account and use it–a lot!–but have never used it for an email address.
Would you mind explaining how to do that?
Thanks for your time!
On PayPal's website you can look under "buy" or "make a payment". It brings up a form to input the recipient's email address and a dollar amount, etc. Here's a link to PayPal's explanation: https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/make-online-payments
I've used it a few times to send payments to people who don't have their own site for collecting payments, and it's very simple!
Yay! I did it! Thanks so much, Kelly!
I bought this lantern from Barbara and am finally ready to make it. Did you enlarge the file to fit the size of 8 1/2 x 11 paper or make it the size showing from Barbara? Yours looks bigger is why I'm asking. Also this file doesn't group and ungroup like a normal Silhouette file. What are the 2 things that look like handles for? I don't see perf marks. Did you have to make your own? So sorry for all the questions, but as you can see I am kinda lost. My email is akewl50@aol.com. Thanks in advance.
I made the file at the size it opened at and did no resizing; it's almost 8" tall, but no bigger. The things that look like handles are optional handles (a vellum layer and a paper layer); I chose not to use them on mine. As far as grouping and ungrouping, I find there's quite a range of ways designers group their files. The perforation marks do show on mine. Have you checked your Cut Style Window to make sure all the cut lines are turned on? I will let Barbara know you have questions.
Thank you so much for such a quick response. I failed to mention I have the original Cameo SD. Could that be the difference?
The Silhouette Studio software is the same for all models of the Silhouette, so the file should behave the same for me as for you. Hopefully Barbara can make sure you can use this file.
This is so beautiful. Would love to buy this, but I do not have a Silhouette. I use the program Sure Cuts Alot 2 with my Cricut. Do you sell this in a svg cutting file form?
I'm not sure if Barbara is still selling these, but you can ask. When I did this project she was selling the file in SVG format. Barbara's email address is at the end of the post above.
Thank You krafting kelly.
Hi, would it be possible to purchase already cut pieces that I would assemble? I would want to make several. This would be perfect for my daughter's wedding. reception.
Laura, I don't typically do cut jobs for others, but if the timing was right I might be able to do it. It would depend on when you need them and how many. I will also have to get permission from Barbara, the designer of this file. Will you send me an email? kellyslater42 at yahoo dot com
