Fall Cards
I needed to make a couple of birthday cards, and my cards in the fall usually have to have something autumn-related (colors or theme) to make me happy. So the birthday ladies today get a jar full of leaves.
I used 8 Fall Leaves (ID# 13190) and Jar (ID# 21430) from the Silhouette Design Store.
I can’t seem to make cards identical; I guess I’m always looking for alternate ways to make it better, so that’s why I’ve got to show all three. I like the hand-drawn outlines in black on the top card but didn’t feel like they “popped” enough, so the bottom card has the lines drawn with a metallic gel pen. The backing from the middle card is a paint-chip sample from Home Depot, cut down to the right size and mounted on a white card base.
The jars themselves are printed on Grafix inkjet transparencies using Silhouette’s print and cut feature. One side has a bit of texture to accept the printer ink, so I flipped it over for the shiny side to be facing up. I cut out all the leaves on pattern paper scraps and inked the edges with a tan-colored chalk inkpad.
Here are some views showing the glassy sheen on the transparency:
I adhered the leaves onto a white blank jar, also cut with the Silhouette, then placed the transparency on top. I used a thin strip of double-sided tape to hold it at the neck of the jar, then covered that part with the ribbon so you couldn’t see the tape.
Happy birthday, Mom and Becca!

Kelly, love the fabric art but your cards are just terrific. Hugs, Lori m
Thank you! I don't see fabric replacing my love of paper any time soon. 🙂
So cool.
Wonderful cards! I've never used transparencies — will have to give it a try. Would sure beat brushing on a glaze. Don't ya just love the Silhouette????? 🙂
Oh, yeah!
Kelly, these are gorgeous! Do you find the blade gets dull faster when you cut the transparencies on the Silhouette?
What a great idea using the paint sample papers for a background!
Jann, this is the first time I've tried transparencies but this blade is months old and didn't give me any trouble. I would guess that it would probably be tougher on the blade to cut a lot of transparencies, but for the right effect it's worth it.
I loved the paint sample on an autumn card because it reminded me of changing colors for fall.
