Graduation Cards

grad-card-3

I made these cards a month ago for three graduating high-school seniors in our neighborhood.  I loved the idea of hot-air balloons paired with this quote from Stampin’ Up!

Because the cards are 5″x7″ and I only had one sheet of cloud paper, two were made vertical and one horizontal so the clouds would sit in the correct orientation.  In the end, I’m not sure which is my favorite of the three.

All of the hot-air balloons come from the same Silhouette cutting file 3d hot air balloon #37445 designed by Snapdragon Snippets.  The file is made to be cut in six pieces with a loop at the top so you can hang it, but for my card I just cut three pieces and did not include the top-loop portion.  For the flat, smaller balloons in the background I simply removed the perforated line and cut one of each color in a smaller size.

I used the SVG of this quote from Stampin’ Up! that came with My Digital Studio 2 by creating an offset in Silhouette Studio and turning it into a print & cut.  I added a touch of blue to the edges of each quote cutout with a Spectrum Noir marker.  The quote is also popped off the card with foam adhesive squares.

I think I may make several more of these to have on hand for future graduates.

  • Hi Kelly,
Love the card. A quick question…you mentioned the stamping up software, My Digital Studio 2, what does that software have or do that the silhouette software does not do? Since you have the sil software, what made you decide to purchase the MDS2 software? Just wondering if it is something I need. hehehehe Thanks.

    • Good question. Here's my long answer. 😉

My Digital Studio 2 is a program made by Stampin' Up! to use for making digital cards and scrapbooks with their digital products. It comes with digital images that, if you have Silhouette Studio's Designer Edition, you can use those SVGs just like any other SVG files you can download or purchase from outside sources. It's just one of many ways to get SVGs that can be used in Silhouette Studio DE. I don't use the MDS2 program itself very often because I love Silhouette Studio or Photoshop Elements for all my designing needs. I should mention that I had to dig through all the folders of the software to find the SVGs themselves so I could open them in Studio DE.

The reason I bought MDS2 is I have past connections with Stampin' Up! products through friends and family and got a good deal at the time. I've always loved a lot of Stampin' Up! products and images.

    • Thanks for the info Kelly. I have seen this on the Stampin' Up website and wondered what the advantages were and wondered if it was something I needed to look in to. May look at it a little more.

  • I love these, Kelly. A very clever idea to use the hot-air balloons & the sentiment is perfect. Great cards.

  • The grads are lucky to have you as a neighbor! Your cards are fabulous, Kelly! I'm so glad someone asked about the Stampin' Up software! I didn't know they had software, and I'm no stamper, nor will I ever be a stamper, but I am an inveterate software junkie. Do they have a LOT of SVGS? I'll have to go check it out now….but thanks for sharing your latest creation – it's a big winner! I think it would make a wonderful classroom poster, too! If I were a student bound for college, I'd put that on my room's bulletin board or on my dorm room door!

    • Thanks, Barbara! The software comes with its own papers, digital elements, and digital stamps (in SVG form). I would not say it has a LOT of SVGs, but you can purchase more digital downloads from Stampin' Up once you have the software.
