Glitter and Vinyl and Rhinestones, Oh My!

Glitter and Vinyl plaque by Kelly Wayment

My mom likes a lot of color and sparkle, so I made this small plaque for her. This quote comes in the Silhouette vinyl starter kit, and I tried something new by adding an accent layer of double-sided adhesive so I could glitterize the word “glitter” in the quote.

Let me say that cutting this particular elegant word at this particular size (it’s about 3.7″ wide by 2.38″ tall) with the Silhouette double-sided adhesive is not for the faint of heart.  I’m sure it would work better in a bigger size, but at this small size it was a little tricky.  The skinny little tails on the G and the R were a little too skinny.  But as you can see, I was able to persuade those tips to behave.  🙂

Although the instructions for Silhouette’s double-sided adhesive tell you to place the yellow side down on your mat, I have a little more success by putting the white side down against the mat instead.  I find that the adhesive releases a little easier from the white backing instead of the yellow, so that’s my solution.

The wood is a bare decorative piece of wood/particle board I picked up at my local Michael’s craft store.  I painted it black then sprayed it with glossy clear acrylic sealer to give a slick surface for the vinyl to cling to.  (That’s what I had on hand.  Glossy spray paint probably would have worked equally well.)

Once that was dry, I cut and applied the quote with white vinyl (also included in the Silhouette vinyl starter kit).  I cut the word “glitter” separately out of double-sided adhesive, peeled off the white backing, and pressed it into place.

My mom loves the color blue, so I sprinkled it with Silhouette’s pretty blue glitter.  After brushing and tapping off what I could, I used painter’s tape and the sticky end of my Silhouette pick-me-up tool to remove the rest of the stray glitter.  I also sprayed one more layer of clear acrylic sealer on top to seal the glitter and vinyl in place.

I used a single aqua rhinestone to dot the “i” in the word “glitter,” but I decided it needed a few more.  I just tossed a few on and set them individually with my Silhouette rhinestone setter.

Perfect! I know my mom is really going to love this.

The final size is approximately 8.5″ wide by 6″ high.
