Craft Along: Christmas Peony Wreath

It’s Christmas in July!

Background: I created this Silhouette Craft Along class to coincide with the Christmas in July sale in the Design Store. I wanted to make another paper flower flower but couldn’t find anything good and Christmas-y. Then I discovered there is such a thing as a Christmas peony! I designed this myself so it would fit the sale, make a pretty Christmas wreath, and still be generic enough to use any time of year.

Go grab this Christmas peony design while it’s on sale, then watch my Craft Along class to see how to turn it into a wreath, below.

Supplies/Tools:

Instructions:

Cut Settings –

  • Frosted Paper: Blade Depth 2, Force 20, Speed 5, Overcut ON
  • Cardstock (65 lb): Blade Depth 3-4, Force 30, Speed 5

Flower Assembly –

2 large petals:

  • Use scraper tool to curl up @ center
  • Use ball tool on outer edges

Inner petals:

  • Use scraper tool to curl up @ center
  • Spritz with water
  • Curl/crumple petals inward (shape each petal around larger ball tool or fingertip)
  • Once petals are all shaped and dry, use pliers to make loop @ end of 18 gauge wire, then bend at 90 degrees, and hot glue inside tightest petal
  • If glue/wire is showing, crumple scrap of same color paper and hot glue in center
  • Slide remaining petals onto wire and hot glue in place, starting with tightest and working to most-open
  • Avoid lining up petal openings; avoid stacking exactly
  • Add two largest petals last
  • Curl sepal leaves, then hot glue in place under finished peony

White filler flowers:

  • Use ball shaping tool to curl each flower petal upwards
  • Flip over and use ball shaping tool just in center
  • Tie 6 knots along green bind wire every 3-4”
  • Use wire cutters to trim immediately above each knot
  • Twist paper wrapping and thread through hole in white flower
  • Secure with white glue at base of knot, against flower center
  • Twist wires together to make 2 clusters of 3 white flowers

Leaves:

  • Peony leaves – curl lightly with scraper tool
  • Holly leaves – fold in half, then curl each section away from center crease

Wreath Assembly –

  • Cut flower wire shorter (leave 3-4”) and bend to form to wreath
  • Use bind wire to tie stem wire to wreath hoop
  • Fill in with shaped peony leaves and holly leaves – hot glue in place
  • Add white accent flowers – tie with wire or hot glue in place

I hope you enjoy this Christmas peony wreath project! Remember, you can make this as a solo flower on a stem (shown below), or use peony leaves instead of holly to make a non-Christmas wreath.
