Easter Treat

I got this idea from someone’s blog, but I bookmarked it in my head instead of in my computer, so I’m sorry if this was your original idea. They put Valentine’s Day conversation hearts in empty soda bottles and I thought that would be cute for any holiday that celebrates candy (and which one doesn’t?).

Also, subway art is a very popular thing to do with vinyl, but I wanted shapes instead of words. So I just measured the size my bottle would need (cut a scrap piece of paper to size and measured that), and plugged that into my paper-size dimensions in Silhouette Studio. Then I just filled it with the phrase “happy Easter” using seven different fonts and packed it with cute spring shapes from all over my library and from free downloads.

Once I cut it out, I wanted to make sure I put it onto the bottle evenly.  (By the way, the soda bottle is just from flavored sodas that have been consumed and washed and the twist-off lids saved.)  So I used my clear transfer tape (I’ve heard clear contact paper works, too), stuck it to my weeded shapes, peeled it away from the backing, and flipped it over to lay sticky-side up.  I also flipped my cutting mat over to use the convenient grid for straight lines.  I laid the bottle down on the sticky-side-up design and transfer paper, and just rolled it from side to side to stick it on.

Vinyl sticks really well to glass, so once part of the design is on, that’s it. There’s no Undo button. Fortunately my trick with the grid worked and all my transfers went on straight.

Once I had the vinyl on and the transfer paper removed, I filled the soda bottles with jelly beans and twisted the lids back on. One 21.5 oz. bag of Brach’s Classic Jelly Bird Eggs filled two bottles exactly. (I showed great restraint and only ate 3 or 4 jelly beans while making these.) I put ribbon or tulle on the necks and covered the lid with a little cardstock or vinyl (my 1″ hole punch was perfect), and flowers.  They look good enough to eat, don’t they?  Happy Easter!
